Edourd Manet

born january 23, 1832, in paris, France. died April 30, 1883

even at a young age, manet was interesting in painting and drawings. his uncle enjoyed the fact that he was interested in art, and took him on various outings. Manet liked the art of the past, works from people like Velazques and Goya. Manet wanted art to be a representation of the present, though, and in his art he attemped to depict contemporary realism.

Manet's first popular painting was The Absinthe Drinker (1858), depicting a man in a tophat and red robes in an alley with several alcoholic drinks around him. this and a couple of his other paintings were generally darker than most paintings.

  1. Goya is another very intriguing artist. You should consider using one of his pieces as a contrast/comparison to your chosen piece by Manet. What does contemporary realism mean to you? Have you done any research on absinthe?
